  • Pros: big hard-drive; remote-controller; decent video quality; light; tiny size
  • Cons: no view-finder; the lid of the usb port opens a lot; it has only 25x optical zoom; only 1 megapixel
  • The Bottom Line: I've been using this for three months now.i always like sony for camcorders.i used a different version of sony hard-drive camcorder.personally in quality-wise, i prefer sony than canon (I used this brand too).the huge capacity makes everything easier. you don't need to carry dvd or tapes. the downloading speed to your computer is fast. if you carry laptop, it shouldn't be any problem of memory at all for a long long trip.i also like the motion pic browser program that comes with it. you can organize all pics that you download or whatever in a cool way in both by dates, months, yr, or folders.but, this camcorder does not come with any movie editing program. i just use windows movie maker to combine pics and videos in a movie, which is just fine...this camcorder is really tiny. you can't compare the size of hard-drive camcorders w/ others. it's great to carry anywhere.so if you buy regular camcorder bag, you won't like it 'cause you have to carry a huge bag with a tiny camcorder unless you carry a lot of equipment together. i take it very useful to buy a wide angle lenz so that you can capture everything if you film in a tiny space and a portable recharger with this camcorder.personally i don't like carrying things and its recharger adapter is kinda bulky, so i carry portable recharger.the downside of this camcorder is like the following:without view-finder, this has only LCD viewer, so in bright places or during the daytime it is really difficult to see what you are capturing. maybe this makes camcorder small.it has only 25x optical zoom otherwise you should use digital zoom. also, only 1 megapixel for the snap shots, so although it has a function of camera, but it is too poor to use it as a camera. that is, if you like both filming and taking pics, you've gotta carry both separate. overall, i think i would recommend this item to others.

  • Pros: Small, one handfull. Good quality pictures. Beware of extra batteries that come with a jumper wire They don't tell you how much battery is left.
  • Cons: This camcorder does not have a viewfinder. The LCD goes blank on a real bright day and you cannot read anything, no focus ,no icons. no framing of the picturs My 30 days to returnwere up while on vac
  • The Bottom Line: I would love to trade this SR85 for a HD camera with a viewfinder. A small camera is hard to hold still in one hand. I obtained a mono leg support. This helped but is akward to pack and carry. My vacation was in Greece, a very hot and bright place. Without a viewfinder, my movies were a complete failure.

  • Pros: Size, Price,Image quality, versatility, editing SW compatibility
  • Cons: Image stabilization, Audio quality on the camara during playback, ergonomics of strap.
  • The Bottom Line: Overall: This camera was feature rich for less than $500 from a Pricegrabber retailer. The same camera was $250 more plus tax in the store. It has every feature I needed, is very small, and the flexibility of the 60Gb hard drive is awesome. The size of the camera is great. It is very small and is easy to transport in all the places you want to take a camcorder. The quality of the picture is very good, I ended up choosing this model instead of an HD camcorder based on price, and concerns with compatibility with editing software. The images from the SR85 are industry standard, and compatible with all of the leading editing packages, and works well for me with Pinnacle Studio Plus V11. The camera has good image stabilization (but could be better), a better than class optical zoom, and the best night recording options available in my opinion. I am also VERY happy with the large hard drive as an upgrade from previous tape camcorder (also a Sony).

  • Pros: Video resolution is actually pretty good inspite of what the spec says. Compact size, quick start up, good battery life. Very easy touch screen manu and software.
  • Cons: Still image resolution need to be improved.
  • The Bottom Line: This is my first digital camcorder, no more tapes or dvds to buy and carry. Battery life is actually pretty good, but it will be a must to buy additional battery for travel or other special events. Its compact size is very comfortable to fit into the palm. Built quality is good. Overall, I think it is a great and easy to use camcorder. Digital still image has a lot of room for SONY to improve on this camcorder. I will recomment this camcorder in spite of its digital image performance, because it is a "Camcorder" :-)

  • Pros: Sleek design, Night shot feature, 60GB hard disk, ease of use
  • Cons: Night Shot plus can give blurry picture in changing light conditions.Absence of viewfinder.
  • The Bottom Line: We loved our camcorder for its sleek design and ease of use. But when we tried testing the Night shot feature on the roadside, the picture becomes hazy whenever a vehicle passes by; in changing light conditions. Apart from this, the camcorder is a good buy for the price they quote. An additional battery is a MUST.
